What Do Concrete Grades Such as C10, C20 and C30 Mean?
The C number is used to indicate the compressive strength of the concrete after it has cured for 28 days. For example, C20 concrete achieves a characteristic compressive strength of 20 N/mm², while C30 achieves 30 N/mm².
As the number increases, so does the specified compressive strength of the concrete. However, choosing concrete is not simply a case of ordering the strongest mix available. Different concrete mixes are designed for different applications, and factors such as exposure, reinforcement, load, ground conditions and the project specification should also be considered.

Which Concrete Mix Do I Need?
The right concrete mix depends on what you are building and the conditions the finished concrete will face.
For lighter domestic applications and non-structural applications, grades such as C10 and C15 may provide the required performance. C20 and C25 are commonly used across a broader range of general building work, while C30 provides the additional strength required for applications such as driveways, external slabs and hardstandings.
C35 and C40 are intended for more demanding applications where higher compressive strength is required.
Concrete specifications can vary considerably between projects, particularly for structural work. If a concrete grade has been specified by an architect, structural engineer or other construction professional, you should order according to that specification rather than substituting another grade.

How Much Concrete Do I Need?
Concrete is normally ordered by volume in cubic metres (m³). The quantity required will depend on the length, width and depth of the area being filled.

It is sensible to allow for uneven ground, variations in excavation and small amounts of wastage when calculating your order. Running short during a concrete pour can cause unnecessary delays, so accurate measurement before ordering is important.
