Concrete Calculator

How much concrete do you need for your next project?

Calculate how much concrete you need

Use the Stacey Concrete Calculator to determine the amount of concrete you need for your next project. Simply enter your dimensions and we will let you know the amount you need.

While we strive for precision, some rounding may be necessary. To avoid shortages, we recommend ordering slightly more than the estimated amount to ensure you have enough material for the job.

We will not charge you for returning any surplus product back to the plant.

Working out how much concrete you need is an important part of planning any concrete project. Order too little and you could be left with an incomplete pour. Order far too much and you may end up paying for concrete that you don’t need.

Our concrete volume calculator provides a quick and simple way to estimate the amount of ready-mix concrete required for your project.

Enter the measurements of the area you need to fill and the calculator will estimate the volume in cubic metres (m³). You can then use this figure when discussing your concrete order with Stacey Concrete.

How to Use Our Concrete Calculator

Before using the calculator, measure the area where the concrete will be poured.

For a straightforward rectangular area, you will normally need three measurements:

  • Length
  • Width
  • Depth or thickness

Make sure your measurements are accurate and, importantly, that you are working with consistent units.

If you have measured the depth in millimetres, for example, remember that 100mm equals 0.1 metres and 150mm equals 0.15 metres.

Enter your measurements into the concrete calculator to estimate the volume required.

How Is Concrete Volume Calculated?

Concrete supplied by a ready-mix concrete company is normally ordered by volume in cubic metres rather than by its surface area.

For a rectangular area, the basic calculation is:

Length × Width × Depth = Concrete Volume

For example, imagine you are creating a concrete slab measuring:

5 metres long × 4 metres wide × 0.1 metres deep

The calculation would be:

5 × 4 × 0.1 = 2m³

The theoretical volume of concrete required would therefore be 2 cubic metres.

Our calculator performs this calculation for you, making it easier to estimate the quantity required before placing your order.

Should I Allow Extra Concrete?

A calculated volume assumes that the area being filled is perfectly uniform. On a real construction site, that isn’t always the case.

Excavations can vary slightly in depth, ground can be uneven and formwork may not be completely uniform. A small amount of material can also be lost during placement.

For this reason, it can be sensible to allow a little extra rather than ordering exactly the theoretical volume.

However, every project is different. If you are unsure about the quantity required, speak to the Stacey Concrete team before ordering.

Calculating Concrete for Different Projects

The same basic volume calculation can be used for many common construction and landscaping projects.

Concrete Slabs

For a rectangular concrete slab, measure its total length and width, then establish the required thickness.

A small difference in thickness can make a considerable difference to the total volume across a large area, so take several measurements if the excavation isn’t completely level.

Concrete Driveways

Driveways can require a significant volume of concrete because of their surface area.

Measure the overall length and width and determine the specified depth. If the driveway has an irregular shape, it can be easier to divide it into several smaller rectangles, calculate each section separately and then add the volumes together.

Concrete Foundations and Footings

Concrete volume for straightforward strip foundations can also be estimated using length × width × depth.

If several trenches are being filled, calculate the volume of each section and add the figures together.

Foundation specifications should always follow the requirements of your plans, building professional, structural engineer or Building Control where applicable.

Shed Bases, Garage Floors and Paths

The calculator can also help estimate quantities for shed bases, garage floors, paths and other concrete areas.

Accurate measurements are particularly important on larger slabs because even a relatively small change in depth across the area can substantially alter the amount of concrete required.

What If My Project Is an Irregular Shape?

Not every concrete pour fits neatly into a rectangle.

One of the easiest ways to calculate an irregular area is to divide it into several smaller, simple shapes.

Calculate the concrete volume required for each section individually and then add the results together.

For complicated projects, varying depths or unusual shapes, contact us with your measurements. We can help you make sense of the quantities before you arrange your delivery.

Choosing the Right Concrete Mix

Knowing how much concrete you need is only one part of placing an order. You also need the appropriate concrete mix for the job.

Stacey Concrete supplies a range of ready-mix concrete grades for different applications, including C10, C15, C20, C25, C30, C35 and C40 concrete.

The correct choice will depend on how the concrete will be used and the strength or specification required.

If a particular grade has been specified by an architect, engineer or contractor, use that specification when ordering. If you’re uncertain which concrete mix is suitable, talk to us about the project and we can discuss the available options.

Measure Before Your Concrete Delivery

It is worth checking your measurements again before confirming an order.

Check the length and width of the area, confirm the required depth and make sure any individual sections have been included in your calculation.

You should also think about access to the pour and how the concrete will be moved from the mixer truck to where it is needed. Having everything prepared before your delivery arrives can make the pour considerably easier.

Ready-Mix Concrete Delivered to Your Project

Once you know approximately how many cubic metres you require, Stacey Concrete can help you arrange the right ready-mix concrete for your project.

We supply concrete for domestic, commercial and construction projects, with a range of mixes available to suit different applications.
